We featured the release of Evi in a post yesterday. The overwhelming popularity of the Evi App for Android and iOS is a potential bomb for the app's creator, True Knowledge. The servers running the Siri-esque application have not been able to cope with the demand by users, leading to a lot of users getting this message in response to their queries:
True Knowledge has released a statement:
On Monday 23rd the world learned about Evi and responded in a phenomenal way. To see how many people were excited by Evi and her app was overwhelming and hugely exciting for us. Unfortunately the enormous response was more than our servers were able to handle and so many users experienced connection problems.
We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who downloaded the app, and to assure you that the team are working around the clock to get Evi back on her feet and ensure that she is better able to handle the huge number of people who wish to ask her questions.
So many thanks from everyone on the team, and Evi herself, for your patience and understanding. You can follow us on Facebook and Twitter to be notified as soon as she is back up and running.
The fact that Evi is compatible with Android devices and older iPhones makes it a potential big competitor to Apple's Siri. In our testing, we also found that using the AI engine via text input was sometimes a preferable alternative to speech input. Speech recognition is quite good, but some technical words or local jargon may have issues. Copying and pasting, for instance, is not something you do via speech. Also, sometimes you just don't want to talk to your phone.
As long as server issues don’t continue to bog Evi down, it is worth a dollar for those of us who can’t use Siri because our phones are too old or Android versions. We hope some of those dollars quickly go towards new servers for True Knowledge to keep up with demand.
